Every year several Erasmus students come to San Jorge University to advance in their studies while learning a new language and getting to know a different culture. In this photo gallery we present 12 European students that are currently studying here, or at least they did it in the first semester. You can click on each image in order to make it bigger.
Irem Kosgeroglu is a Turkish journalism student who has adapted well to life in Zaragoza. One of the things that has made it easy for her to adapt is her love of sports. She explains that “there are not many differences between my country and Spain, but here, for example, I can ride a bike as a means of transport.” She thinks that Spanish universities should offer more English subjects for Erasmus students who don’t understand Spanish.
Simge Celik, 21, studies Journalism in Istanbul University, which she considers is very different from San Jorge University, where she studies currently. “In Turkey there are around 200 students in class and we don’t do any practical exercises, only theoretical ones while here there are 40 or 50 people in class and we do a lot of practical exercises, which I think is better,” she says. Simge also explains that although Spain and Turkey are Mediterranean countries, they have cultural and religious differences, “In Spain the religion is more flexible than in Turkey.”
Hikmet Isin, 31, was born in Istanbul and is proud of being from a city that joins two worlds: Europe and Asia. Hikmet thinks he lives in a multicultural country but he does not want to stay in Turkey forever. He loves travelling and knowing new places. He has visited many countries and says, «If I become rich I would like to travel around the world.” He studies Radio, Cinema and TV at Istanbul University and wants to be a film director like his favourite professor at San Jorge University, Paula Ortiz.
Görkem Atlar is an Erasmus student from Turkey and is enjoying the challenge of studying abroad. “You’re going to another country and you’re discovering that culture, meeting a lot of students from different countries and of course enjoying parties and all of these things are changing your world view and vision.” He admits there are differences between Turkey and Spain, but he feels at home here, “I think Spanish people are very friendly and they’re always trying to help you,” he says.
Two months ago, Cyprien Huet Pope left his home in Bordeaux, France and came to Zaragoza to study at San Jorge University. He enjoys living in Zaragoza, “I love Zaragoza and I love the people, the night life is great and so are the tapas,” he says. At San Jorge University he studies a double degree in Journalism and Visual Communication while in Nantes he studies Political Science.
Sarah Olsson is a Swedish girl who has come to Spain to study journalism. She studies in the University of Stockholm and is in Zaragoza trying to perfect her Spanish. Sarah is a hardworking person and dreams of seeing the world possibly as a correspondent in a newspaper or in the radio. When I ask Sarah why she has chosen Spain, she answers: “the language, the people and although I’m vegetarian, I love eating Spanish omelet and «pantumaka.”
Zuzana Topolska is a 20-year-old girl from Bratislava Slovakia who decided to study in the University of San Jorge in Zaragoza by the Erasmus program. She has always wanted to work as in public relations. «What I like the most is the similarity between the old quarter I live in here and the one in Bratislava. That makes me feel near my city, «she says.
Katrien Van Praet is from Belgium and is determined about what she wants to do. “I like being on my own. I mean, I’m independent and I like doing my own things,” she explains. For her, Erasmus is perfect; going abroad for not too long. Katrien can speak Frech and English fluently, but last year she decided it was time to learn Spanish. “It’s very hard because I can’t say everything I would like to,” she says.
Cedric Van Rompaey Cedric, 19, is from Belgium and he studies Communication Science. He chose this country because he likes the language and says, “I love Spain because of its culture, the relaxing way of life, the siestas, the sangria and Spanish football.” Cedric’s dream is to be a TV news anchor, especially in sports, “Although it is hard to accomplish this dream, I’ll try my best,” he says
Lennert Van de Walle is an Erasmus student who was born in the north of Belgium, near Ghent. He studies Communication in Gent University and chose that degree because he didn’t really want a normal 9-to-5 job. He would like to travel a lot and, he loves writing and expressing things on paper. He is enjoying his experience in Zaragoza and is learning a lot in his classes in the School of Communication.
Arno Vanvreckem, a 20-year-old student from Belgium is studying in the USJ School of Communication. One of the things he likes the most about Zaragoza is the way of life her, “In Belgium everything is stressing and everything has to be on time, while here in Spain you can be more relaxed,” he says. “I don’t want to work for the media, I want to do something related to Defense Organization and that’s why I chose Communication Science.”
Giray Aytek Ozdemir, 25, studies Visual Communication Design at Kocaeli University one hour to the East of Istanbul. He decided to come to Spain because he wanted to have an unforgettable experience far away from the place he sees every day. He laughs when he talks about the language barrier: “I sound like a way more intelligent person when I speak my native language since I´m able to say what I want to say in the way I want to. But I don’t have any problems with meeting other people,” he says.
