Diets in the face of the summer have increased by 30% as many Spaniards have already activated the so-called ‘operation bikini’. But, be careful, because not all methods are valid. Sometimes you lose weight as fast as you gain it after finishing your “miracle” diet. Watch out, ladies, because not all that glitters is gold.
The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate diet created by Robert Atkins, who popularized the method in a series of books, such as “Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution,” published in 1972. This diet limits consumption of carbohydrates that force the body’s metabolism to convert stored body fat to energy.
It’s easy to find many women that assure that they got good results. Maruse Nogués, from Zaragoza, has been on a diet for three months, and she is very happy because she has lost 8 kilograms. “I feel very good, but to be honest I still have to visit my doctor for a checkup,” Maruse says. On the other hand, there are several studies that run the gamut from promoting the safety and efficacy of the diet to condemning it as dangerous. María Garcés has finished her degree in Food Science and Technology, and she warns us about the consequences of avoiding fruit and sugar consumption. “Glucose is the main source of energy for our muscles and our brain,” says María Garcés.
The RVA University of Copenhague has published in The Lancet magazine a revolutionary research that shows the consequences of the Atkins diet. The most dangerous is that low-carbohydrate diets put people at risk of heart disease. However, the Standford University denies those results. According to their study, which was published in the Medical Association journal, the Atkins diet is one of the most effective, and it couldn’t lead to a risk of significant adverse effects.
People diet for many reasons. Some play sports, and they want to be in top physical condition. Some are at an unhealthy weight, so they need to pay attention to their eating habits. However, some people diet because they think they are supposed to look a certain way. Most fashions are shown off by very thin models. But, is this beauty? This look is unrealistic for most people. Don’t risk your health for a fashionable dress!
