Tattoos: a risky business

The Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) confirmed that tattoos can cause health problems due to the invasive techniques used if hygienic conditions are not respected. In addition, the World Health Organization WHO says that tattoos made with contaminated material can transmit diseases such as hepatitis C which infects four million people every year.

Noelia Ruber, artist of Imperium Tattoo in Zaragoza, explains that a study with a good process of sterilization must contain a series of essential instruments mainly an ultrasound and an autoclave to eliminate bacteria. The tattooist must be careful with the needles and gloves because a tattoo is a wound.

Fidel Prieto, secretary of the National Union of Professional Tattooists (UNTAP), says that currently in Spain there are between 1,200 and 1,500 tattoo studios.

In recent years there has been an increase of people wanting to get a tattoo. In the case of Zaragoza Imperium Tattoo is very popular where a small tattoo costs about €200 and where the waiting list is three months. «I can not speak of a crisis in the tattoo world,” Ruber said.

The Journal of the Canadian Medical Association (CMAJ) has recently reported that in the United States about 36 percent of the young people between 18 and 25 have tattoos. Because of this, the hygiene controls are increasing in the studios. However, Noelia Ruber says that many small studios are making tattoos without being careful with the sterilization and this situation should not be allowed.
